Suggested Sources for Free Images, Video, and Audio

Why is this list useful to me?

While it's sometimes tempting to copy media from the web and reuse it elsewhere, this may be a copyright issue. All work is protected by copyright for a period of timei. During that time, the copyright owner holds the economic and moral rights associated with the work. If you would like to use material that is protected by copyright, you may need to ask permission from the copyright owner. The Guide for Instructors provided on the Copyright at Waterloo website provides guidance for when permission is required and when it is not.

Not having to to ask permission to reuse material will expedite course development. The list below includes sources for images, video and audio that do not require permission to reuse.

This list is designed to provide suggestions for sources of legitimate, verifiable media (images, sound, music, video) that can be used in University of Waterloo courses with minimal copyright restrictions. Check the terms of each site for more information on these restrictions.

This list is not restrictive; other sites may have similar terms (e.g. many cultural institutions around the world provide images they have placed in the public domain or made available through Creative Commons licenses). It may be possible to clear media from other sources. Consult the University of Waterloo’s Fair Dealing Advisory to determine if Fair Dealing can be applied to a particular item or contact copyright@uwaterloo.ca for more help.

This list is far from comprehensive. If you have suggestions that we should consider adding, please email teachingsupport@uwaterloo.ca.

We also encourage you to explore resources, like ARTstor, that are available through a library license and have been curated by subject librarians in Subject Guides.
